Most borer problems are caused by the larvae of beetles. The best way to avoid borers is to choose trees that are less susceptible to them, and make sure that whatever trees you have, especially the more susceptible species, are well watered. Borers are attracted to and can more easily cause damage to insufficiently watered trees. If borers are a problem, or the tree you have is especially susceptible, they can be treated annually with an insecticide that is made from an organic plant-originated compound that is low toxicity to mammals, and will not damage beneficial insects.
